The Pan American Gymnastics Complex, one of a kind

One of the athletic complexes that form the infrastructure in development for the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara.

GUADALAJARA, JALISCO- Isidro Alvarez, director of artistic gymnastics at the Jalisco Pan American Gymnastics Complex, described this part of the athletic infrastructure for the competitions of the 2011 Pan American Games as a “unique Mexican attraction.” The facilities have already been in use since 2007 for the Jalisco Artistic Gymnastics Trials to prepare future talents in the sport.

Upon entering the complex, one can truly appreciate the dimensions of the place. Today, the equipment is being used for practice in this discipline, which Alvarez describes as a sport that is “very difficult, both for the coaches and those who compete.”

The Pan American Gymnastics Complex will house the three distinct gymnastics disciplines of the Pan American games: rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, and trampoline, for both men and women.

The site also houses equipment brought from France on which athletes can practice artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, and trampoline, in preparation for the competitions that the 2011 Pan American games will host.

Furthermore, in the gymnasium where the competitions will occur there’s a place where athletes can practice rhythmic gymnastics as well; however, for the tournament, it will serve as the warm-up area for the participants.

The director of artistic gymnastics said that the approximate measurements of the complex are 50x35. Additionally, he mentioned that “some students of the complex may participate in Guadalajara 2011, so we are making good use of the facility.”

Gymnastics in Jalisco

Isidro Alvarez assured that gymnastics in the state is growing by “gigantic steps” and that a clear example of this growth has been how they’ve increased the number of medals won in the last three National Olympics.

“In the recent 2009 Olympics, we saw how Jalisco came up in the medal count for gymnastics. In 2007 the state won only one first place award, but in 2008 there were fourteen gold medals, and in this past National Olympics there were 26 golds. Looking at this trend, we can see that we keep advancing by gigantic steps in the performance of this discipline. When one stops to look at the history of how this happened, it has been thanks to the director, Dr. Andrade Garin, who had the vision and who organized himself methodically to carry it out. They made up their minds to turn around all of the sports at virtually the same time. The logistics and work the job requires are very difficult; that’s why it’s so unlikely that Jalisco has become champion. The state will be the champion for many years to come as long as it doesn’t change how it operates.”

As to the question of why they’ve seen these advances, the strategist said that much of this is due to the vision that the sports authorities have had, as in the case of the director of Code Jalisco, Carlos Andrade Garin.

“The foresight that Andrade Garin and the directors of the high performance Code Jalisco had, regarding artistic gymnastics was very good. Thanks to his vision of putting in place the coaches and equipment, making it easy for school sports programs, over a couple of years, we have made ourselves champions in this discipline, as much in the men’s branch as the women’s. It’s a very rewarding sport.”
